US aluminium demand grows nearly 4%

Demand for aluminium in the US and Canada continued to grow in the third quarter, with sheet used by canmakers growing by nearly 7%.
The latest data from the US-based Aluminum Association (AA) showed that investments for domestic manufacturing operations to meet demand for sustainable packaging and vital infrastructure has helped the industry retain its competitive advantage.
Aluminium demand increased 4.6% through the first three quarters of 2024, totalling an estimated 20,712 million pounds (9.4 metric tonnes), compared to 19,798 million pounds a year earlier, the AA’s monthly Aluminum Situation report showed.
Demand for sheet and plate products grew by 6.9% year-over-year, while foil, extrusions and electrical products declined. In total, semi-fabricated – or ‘mill’ – product demand was up 2.5% year-over-year.
Aluminium exports, excluding scrap, to foreign countries increased 23.3% in the quarter.
Meanwhile, imported aluminium and aluminium products into North America decreased 8% through Q3 2023.
