Greenhouse gas emissions from aluminium production continue to fall

Time of issue::2024-12-30 11:15

The trend in falling greenhouse gas emissions from the global production of aluminium is continuing, according to the International Aluminium Institute (IAI).

The IAI reported a 2.33% reduction in emissions in aluminium production, which is now at 10.04 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per tonne of the metal produced.

The trend is continuing even as aluminium production rises, according to the IAI. In 2023, production rose 2.75% to 111.2 million tonnes, with an increase of GHG emissions of 0.36%.

The IAI said GHG emissions were “essentially stable” since 2020 when “total greenhouse gas emissions from the aluminium industry peaked”.

In terms of Scope 3 emissions for canmakers, the trend will support reporting requirements.

Miles Prosser, IAI secretary general, told The Canmaker: “Users of aluminium, such as canmakers, will benefit from the reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity of aluminium as it will reduce their Scope 3 emissions. They also benefit from increased production of aluminium.”

The IAI has said that to comply with the 1.5 C deg target, and net zero pledges, GHG emissions would have to be drastically reduced from the entire aluminium industry.

“Canmakers are also able to see positive trends in emissions, albeit with much work still to be done in future years,” he added.
