UK aluminium packaging recycling continues upward momentum in Q3

Time of issue::2024-12-13 14:07

The UK’s aluminium packaging recycling rates grew 15% in the third quarter of 2024, according to the latest data from the National Packaging Waste Database (NPWD) published by the Environment Agency.

A total of 43,466 tonnes of aluminium packaging was collected for recycling during the quarter, with 32,294 tonnes sourced through kerbside, bring and on-the-go systems, up 15% compared with Q3 2023. An additional 10,910 tonnes was recovered from incinerator bottom ash (IBA).

Cumulatively, 119,792 tonnes of aluminium packaging was collected for recycling in the UK in the first nine months of 2024, more than 81% of the annual target of 147,080 tonnes.

Tom Giddings, executive director of UK packaging recycling organisation Alupro, attributed the growth to widespread pressure to prioritise the use of recyclable materials. “With more and more material being placed on the market, it’s positive to see that recycling is not just keeping pace, but accelerating fast.”

But he warned of the importance of continued consumer education. He said: “Through our awareness programmes, Every Can Counts and MetalMatters, we will continue to play a driving role in reminding households about the value of best practice recycling, while working towards our ambitious goal of a 100% recycling rate for aluminium packaging.”

In July, the not-for-profit organisation revealed it had signed a two-year partnership with Suez Recycling and Recovery UK to increase aerosol can recycling rates.
