‘World’s lightest can’ starts production run

Time of issue::2024-08-30 16:33

Toyo Seikan has begun production on what it claims is the “world’s lightest can” for Coca Cola’s Georgia coffee brand products.

The can comprises 6.1g of aluminium per container, not including the polyester laminate on the body or lid, according to Toyo Seikan’s laboratory tests.

Coca Cola chose the can, which is strengthened with compression bottom reform (CBR) technology, for its 185ml Georgia Coffee brand products. Production has started on a “limited run” in the Kanto region of Japan, where Toyo Seikan has its head office.

The company said this was the “first mass production of the 190ml 202 SOT (stay-on-tab) aTULC (Aluminum Toyo Ultimate Can) with CBR technology”.

Toyo Seikan claimed the weight reduction results in 8% less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared with existing cans: “Using CBR technology, Toyo Seikan has reduced the weight of its 190ml 202 diameter SOT cans by 0.9g, from 7.0g to 6.1g.”

CBR technology is being rolled out across Toyo Seikan’s manufacturing facilities, and will also be applied to 350ml and 500ml cans, as well as the 190ml can.

The cans will be filled with Georgia Emerald Mountain Blend, Georgia Golden Drip, Georgia Platinum Black, and Georgia Prime Blend.

The can won the Packaging Technology category of the Japan Packaging Contest 2024 for Toyo Seikan.
