China’s aluminum exports impacted by CBAM in 2023

Time of issue::2024-02-19 14:17

According to the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA), China's aluminum product exports, which were included in the scope of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), to the EU dropped by 30% year on year to 689,000 tons in 2023. The export value of these products slid by 26% to around CNY 22.8 billion.

The affected products included aluminum structures, plates, sheets, and strips, which accounted for 9% of China's total aluminum exports.

The EU's CBAM, whose first phase launched last October, is to prevent the bloc's green transition from being obstructed by high carbon emissions pollutions from other countries. The EU currently requests EU importers to give reports about greenhouse gas emissions generated during the production process of the imported products.
