Dürr installs RTO system at SAPIN’s metal print facility
Plant engineering specialist Dürr has installed a regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO) at Saudi Arabia-based metal and plastic packaging supplier SAPIN.
The installation was undertaken to control volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during the metal printing process at Damman-based Saudi Arabian Packaging Industry WLL (SAPIN).
Adrian Pulido, senior sales manager Surface Treatment at Dürr, told The Canmaker: “All components of the system (drives, sensors, etc.) had to be designed with respect to the very high ambient temperatures.”
He said the OxiX.RA unit by Dürr began operations in the first quarter of 2024.
For nearly 50 years, SAPIN, has operated across three plants in Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) producing two and three-piece cans for aerosols, general line and food cans.
As one of KSA’s largest packaging companies, SAPIN has grown from 39.3 billion units in 2018 to 44.5 billion units in 2023.
Dürr’s technology converts VOCs released during canmaking processes to carbon dioxide and water vapour through high-temperature oxidation. The company added: “The regenerative process involves capturing and reusing heat to preheat incoming air, drastically reducing energy consumption. This makes the RTO not only effective at reducing emissions, but also highly energy-efficient, providing significant savings in operational costs.”
It said that the RTO system can also operate in ‘autothermal mode’, which reduces the need for an external energy source.
“The successful installation of Dürr Systems’ RTO at SAPIN highlights the critical role of advanced technologies in achieving environmental sustainability,” it said.
